History matching and uncertainty analysis are not done for their own sakes. They serve the imperatives of environmental decision-making.

But what are these imperatives? We need to know them before we can say whether they are being properly served. A willingness to serve these imperatives has an over-riding effect on how  decision-support modelling is undertaken, and on software that is used to implement it.

These topics are examined in this section.
